It would probably be ideal if business and life were as simple as producing goods, selling them and recording the profits. But there are often circumstances that disrupt the cycle, and it’s part of the accountants job to report these as well. Changes in the business climate, or cost of goods or any number of things can lead to exceptional or extraordinary gains and losses in a business. Some things that can alter the income statement can include downsizing or restructuring the business. This used to be a rare thing in the business environment, but is now fairly commonplace. Usually it’s done to offset losses in other areas and to decrease the cost of employees’ salaries and benefits. However, there are costs involved with this as well, such as severance pay, outplacement services, and retirement costs.

In other circumstances, a business might decide to discontinue certain product lines. Western Union, for example, recently delivered its very last telegram. The nature of communication has changed so drastically, with email, cell phones and other forms, that telegrams have been rendered obsolete. When you no longer sell enough of a product at a high enough profit to make the costs of manufacturing it worthwhile, then it’s time to change your product mix.

Lawsuits and other legal actions can cause extraordinary losses or gains as well. If you win damages in a lawsuit against others, then you’ve incurred an extraordinary gain. Likewise if your own legal fees and damages or fines are excessive, then these can significantly impact the income statement.

Occasionally a business will change accounting methods or need to correct any errors that had been made in previous financial reports. Generally Accepted Accounting Procedures (GAAP) require that businesses make any one-time losses or gains very visible in their income statement.

Reeling in customers
The obvious benefit of a promotional product is that consumers using the product will become increasingly familiar with the brand. This will make the company more recognizable and memorable to consumers.

Popular promotional products, like a t-shirt with the company name on it, may become a man’s casual shirt that he wears to play basketball with his friends. Every time he wears that shirt, his friends see the logo and will recognize it later when they are looking to fulfill a need in that business. The friend will not recall where he saw the logo, but familiarity with having seen it before will give that company an edge. Or, think of promotional pens. Each time a consumer pulls it out of her bag to jot a note, she is engraving that logo into her memory a little bit further.

Showing customers you appreciate them
While promotional products help increase your companies’ brand recognition, and opens doors to new customers, your current customers are a critical part of the promotional product process.

When the competition gets fierce, your customers are more likely to stay with you because you have treated them so well. That could lead to referrals. Also, remember that if you have a special group of customers that gives you far more business than your average customer, you should consider giving them a better product than the other customers, especially if those customers are aware they are especially generous customers.

What are the best products today?
You are generally better off choosing products that will be used frequently rather than shoved in the back corner of an office, or thrown away after only one use. The greater likelihood the product will be used often, the more opportunities to increase brand recognition.

Though there are some obvious promotional products, like pens and t-shirts, carefully consider your clients and the nature of your business when making a selection. For example, Google gave web customers a wireless computer mouse in one of their promotional packages. This would not be appropriate for a gardener, but is highly useful and highly likely to be reused frequently by a web client.

Also, make sure you choose a product that does not fall apart easily, or a pen that is prone to leak. You want your customers to be able to say to their friends, “Oh this cool pocketknife? The company that does such-and-such gave it to me.”

Wearable items make up over a quarter of the promotional products industry, followed by writing instruments like pens, but there is no black and white “wrong” and “right” promotional product.

Make your decisions wisely, and boost your companies’ image with your existing and potential customers.

There are many ways to promote your site. Some cost you money. Some cost you time. Most cost you both money and time. Well, if you are like this author, I have a lot more time than money.

This approach is not going to cost you any money, but you will invest some time with your efforts. Sound fair to you? Then let’s get started.

Here’s the first step in the “Two Step”:

1) WRITE ARTICLES

Articles are probably the very best way for you to get some good, targeted traffic to you site.

There are many fr*ee ways to gain traffic, but none of them bring you “targeted” traffic. That’s what you really need.

Here is the second step in the “Two Step”.

2) DISTRIBUTE YOUR ARTICLES.

There are lots of ways to accomplish this. I am going to suggest a few of them. Very likely you will discover many more ways.

-Send them to other publishers who are looking for fresh content.

-Place them in article directories. (A simple search will locate many,)

-Create an article directory on your site.

-Place them in autoresponders with follow-up messages.

-Send them out with snail mail messages that you are doing.

The more articles you write, send out and publish to directories on line, the more exposure you will get and the more traffic you will receive.

Set yourself a goal to write at least one article per week and distribute it. More often if you can do it.

You will be amazed with the results, and the benefits of an article campaign can last for years and become viral as your articles are posted on other’s site.

Writing and publishing articles is one of the easiest and least expensive ways to bring your site some long term targeted traffic and links from other sites.
